DEUTSCH-TÜRKISCHE MUSIKAKADEMIE

Deutsch-Türkische Musikakademie (DTM) is a non-profit educational institution dedicated to diverse cultural activities. Founded in 1998, it has developed into a platform for research, teaching, and publications aimed at promoting intercultural understanding in the field of music.

Since 2003, the DTM has been working in the spirit of mutual influence between European classical music and Turkish musical cultures. The foundations of this approach were already laid in 1828 with the appointment of Giuseppe Donizetti as General Music Director at the court of Constantinople. It was later further institutionalized through the contributions of Paul Hindemith and Carl Ebert in establishing the State Conservatory in Turkey in the 1930s.

The aim is to encourage a deeper engagement with different musical systems in order to promote mutual openness and understanding. The DTM addresses this goal through events, seminars, workshops, and particularly through concerts organized by its music school.

Collaboration with numerous European orchestras, choirs, and institutions has firmly strengthened the academy’s reputation as a reliable cooperation partner. Qualified instructors, experienced musicians, and graduates of music universities ensure an effective educational program and facilitate students’ introduction to both Anatolian and Western instruments. In addition to Turkish musical instruments, instruments from the Western musical tradition are also taught at the academy.

Identity and cultural diversity

Musical education opens pathways for people of all backgrounds to meet and connect. The Deutsch-Türkische Musikakademie is not only an artistic project, but also an integrative and intercultural initiative. Many people of Turkish descent – especially those with a strong educational background – have a desire to learn the music of their homeland.

The DTM is a place for everyone who loves music and culture, regardless of age. Music provides a foundation for understanding between nations and for appreciating diverse cultural identities. At the heart of our work is instruction on classical instruments of European and Oriental art and folk music, including piano, bağlama, violin, guitar, and kanun, as well as choir, singing and dance.

School for life

Making music oneself is an experience that develops special competencies. The sense of the value of individual performance within the community and the joy of working towards a common goal are strengthened. At our music academy, students of all ages not only learn an instrument but also value respectful interaction with one another. Our students showcase their skills in concerts and public performances.

INSPIRATION THROUGH BOUNDLESS MUSIC

Music is an immediately tangible culture and transcends language and educational barriers. The experience of the fusion of Oriental and European music is an inspiration for coexistence in our society. Our music instruction addresses the mutual influence of European and Turkish musical culture, which has been consciously promoted in institutions in Turkey since the 19th century. In DTM’s performances, the audience encounters the art music of the Orient and its fusion with European classical music.
